I mean, I understand that people do think that way -- or at least, it looks like they do -- but I just don't understand how. Even if he thought that he had to do it, didn't he have some doubts? Some regrets?
This was an honor killing - the father thought his daughter was sullying the family name as well as his authority by having feelings for an outsider.
It's something that we Westerners have to come to terms with - there are cultures where women are kept under strict control, where men's authority is the final word, and where violence is often the solution to a great many problems. This is the true "clash of civilizations," and there are no easy answers for it.
In our own context, how do we "educate" inveterate racists and homophobes? How do we convince child abusers and spouse beaters not to do what they do? How do you carry on constructive and persuasive dialogue with paranoid survivalists hiding in the mountains?
